Most of the overnight lane closures around the I-4 and US 27 interchange belong to a smaller job that runs separately from the long-promised I-4 widening. The Florida Department of Transportation started that job in early summer 2026 so the interchange works better before the full rebuild begins.
The smaller job also reaches an intersection. US 27 at Posner Boulevard and Home Run Boulevard is being rebuilt to run on a different set of turning rules. The widening with express lanes is scheduled for "visible construction" in 2027.
Two projects, one interchange
FDOT runs this corridor under its Moving I-4 Forward program, and the Davenport end of it has two layers.
| U.S. 27 Accelerated Congestion Relief | Moving I-4 Forward Project 3 | |
|---|---|---|
| Where | I-4 and US 27 interchange area, plus US 27 at Posner Blvd./Home Run Blvd. | I-4 from west of US 27 to west of ChampionsGate Blvd./C.R. 532, about 4 miles |
| What it builds | A longer I-4 westbound exit to US 27, a free-flow turbo lane onto US 27 southbound, an added southbound US 27 lane, and a reconfigured Posner/Home Run intersection | Two express lanes in each direction, general-use lanes, and operational improvements at the US 27 interchange |
| Schedule | Construction started early summer 2026 | 2027: visible construction |
The early package follows a model FDOT has already used on I-4. The state says it builds on the effort that opened the I-4 congestion relief lanes in April 2025. Both apply the same idea: fix the worst bottleneck first instead of waiting years for the full reconstruction.
The schedule for the big project has read two different ways. FDOT's older I-4 Beyond page for what used to be called "Segment 5" still lists "Construction Start: Fall 2026." That same page now calls itself legacy information and sends readers to Moving I-4 Forward, which says construction on the segment has been accelerated. The Project 3 handout FDOT shared at its summer public meeting at the Lake Eva Event Center in Haines City lists 2027 for visible construction.
How the Posner Boulevard intersection will work
FDOT calls the new design a Continuous Flow Corridor. The illustration on its project page is labeled "R-CUT," which is shorthand for a restricted crossing U-turn. The idea is to take left turns and straight-across movements from the side streets out of the main intersection.
According to FDOT's description, a driver coming out of Posner Boulevard or Home Run Boulevard who wants to go left or cross US 27 will:
- Turn right onto US 27.
- Drive to a signalized median opening on that side of the intersection.
- Make a U-turn there and continue in the direction they want.
The Posner Boulevard and Home Run Boulevard intersection is one of the busiest turning points on this stretch of US 27. Anyone who uses it regularly will relearn it, because the left-turn habit that works today won't work once the new pattern opens. Drivers making a left from US 27 onto the side streets keep that movement. The redesign is aimed at the crossing and left-turn traffic coming out of the side streets.
FDOT points to Federal Highway Administration figures for this kind of design, saying Continuous Flow Corridors can increase traffic flow by up to 30 percent and cut travel times by up to 40 percent on high-volume corridors. Those numbers describe what the design type can do. They aren't a forecast for this specific intersection.
Pedestrians get a new route too. They'll cross US 27 diagonally on what FDOT calls a Z-crossing, using the center median as a refuge. That keeps people on foot out of the path of drivers turning left off US 27 and drivers turning right out of the side streets.
FDOT hasn't published a date for switching to the new pattern, and neither the project page nor the fact sheet gives a completion date for the accelerated package. The schedule line reads "Construction Start: Early Summer 2026" and nothing more.
The exit ramp, the turbo lane and the extra lane
The other three pieces of the early package are aimed at the backups drivers see at the interchange itself.
The I-4 westbound exit to US 27 will be extended. FDOT says that separates exiting traffic from I-4 through traffic. This is the ramp drivers coming home from the Orlando side take into Davenport, and FDOT lists shorter travel and wait times there as one of the project's stated benefits, along with the Posner intersection.
The existing right-most turn lane from I-4 westbound onto US 27 southbound will become a turbo lane, which FDOT describes as a designated free-flow lane with a continuous green light.
US 27 will also gain a fourth southbound travel lane from the I-4 westbound off-ramp intersection to the Posner Boulevard and Home Run Boulevard intersection.
FDOT's construction notes are short: nightly lane closures, temporary pavement markings, signage and signals, and what the agency calls "noticeable progress." Temporary markings and signals mean the lane layout can change between your Tuesday and Thursday commutes while the work continues.
What the overnight closures look like
The closures so far have run in the middle of the night, and the detours follow the local road network. FDOT's notices for the window from Oct. 26 through Nov. 5 show the pattern:
| Date | What closes | Hours | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oct. 26–27 | ChampionsGate Blvd./C.R. 532 eastbound under I-4 | 11 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. | Bridge construction; the dual left-turn lanes from the I-4 westbound off-ramp to C.R. 532, Exit 58, also close |
| Oct. 28–29 | C.R. 532 westbound under I-4 | 11 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. | Bridge construction; the dual left-turn lanes from the I-4 eastbound off-ramp also close |
| Nov. 2–3 | C.R. 532 on-ramp to I-4 westbound | 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. | Ramp construction |
| Nov. 4 | I-4 eastbound, US 27 to ChampionsGate Blvd. | Midnight to 5 a.m. | Road construction |
| Nov. 5 | I-4 eastbound, US 27 to S.R. 429 | Midnight to 5 a.m. | Detour via US 27 north and US 192 east |
During the I-4 eastbound closure between US 27 and ChampionsGate, FDOT's detour uses streets most Davenport drivers already know. Take Exit 55 to US 27, head north about 1.8 miles to Ronald Reagan Parkway, turn right, go about 2 miles to ChampionsGate Boulevard, turn left, and get back on I-4 East from C.R. 532. Drivers already on US 27 northbound follow the same route past the interchange.
New notices go up regularly on the Moving I-4 Forward construction updates page, and FDOT runs an email alert sign-up for the corridor through I-4 Beyond. That page is the most dependable way to know whether a late-night trip to the airport or an early shift is going to hit a detour.
The ChampionsGate work sits at the line between two projects. Project 3 ends west of C.R. 532. East of it, a separate Project 2 runs from east of C.R. 532 to west of World Drive in Osceola County. Project 2 adds two express lanes and four general-use lanes in each direction, plus new connections to S.R. 429 and S.R. 538. In April 2026, Lane Construction announced it had been named the preferred team for Project 2 under a $582 million modified phased design-build contract. The closure notices for the C.R. 532 bridge don't say which contract the work falls under.
Why the early fix matters on this stretch of US 27
The interchange work isn't the only change coming to US 27. A 56-acre shopping center is planned at US 27 and Holly Hill Grove Road 2, just north of Ridgewood Lakes. GrowthSpotter reported in August that the site will have a Walmart Supercenter and Polk County's first Sam's Club side by side, parking for more than 1,500 cars, and nine outparcels, two of them gas stations. A 24-hour Whataburger, also Polk County's first, is planned for outparcel number six. As of that report, construction had started on the Walmart, and the Whataburger was still in Polk County's Level-2 site plan review. No opening dates have been announced.
Polk County Planning Administrator Erik Peterson told GrowthSpotter, "We've been trying to attract commercial for a long time, so it is great to see it now. It is needed in the community." GrowthSpotter also reported that the closest Sam's Club today is in Lakeland.
For Davenport, the order of these projects is what matters. The new shopping and the new turning pattern at Posner Boulevard and Home Run Boulevard are both planned for this stretch of US 27 well before 2027. That's when FDOT's handout puts visible construction on the express lanes. FDOT itself describes the early package as a way to "immediately improve safety and traffic flow in this area for Polk County residents and daily commuters" while the full interchange reconstruction waits for Project 3.
Road projects like this one affect how buyers think about drive times, especially around Posner and ChampionsGate.
